Before I had any right to dismiss Twihards or criticize the psychologically unhealthy relationship model that Bella Swan and Edward Cullen present, I felt obliged to read the books. So I did. All four novels, one novella, and an incomplete document in portable format. The content lived down to my expectations, but I was unprepared for how poorly crafted the saga is. Anonymous asked you: Have you read Limyaael’s Rants?
I don’t think so.

Anonymous asked you: Shouldn’t some of your angst be directed at the editor? All writers make mistakes, that is why they have editors.
It’s a little of column A and a little of column B. As I understand it, an editor marks up a book, but the writer gets the final say about what gets changed. I don’t really care at this point who is responsible. I direct my displeasure at Stephenie The Writer (not necessarily Stephenie The Human), the characters, the books, and occasionally the editor.

Anonymous asked you: You know you lack a life when you create a blog and dedicate it to criticizing a book you dislike.
You know you lack balls/credibility when you criticize a blog anonymously.

Anonymous asked you: You know a lot of the rules for ‘good’ writing, so I was wondering whether you are a writer or do you just do this as a hobby?
The line is getting blurry.

Anonymous asked you: Hello! Love this site. I was telling someone about it who happens to love Twilight. They decided to take a defensive stance against RwV and I said that it’s all in good grammar fun. My twilight friend’s position was that you are ignoring the plot of the book when you get frustrated about Bella becoming a vampire. Apparently she has to become a vampire so that everyone does not die. I have not read Twilight (shh) so I couldn’t argue back. Will you take this one?
Bella first asked Edward about changing her when she was in the hospital in Phoenix after James attacked her. That was before the Volturi were even aware of her. Her decision to become a vampire has less to do with being backed into a corner by Italian vampires and more to do with her obsession with Edward. The Volturi gave her leverage. The first book suggests she was toying with the idea before Bella was in danger from people-eating vampires. I’d be more likely to buy into the “Bella HAD to” argument if she didn’t salivate about getting Edward’s perfect marble ass forever when transformation is mentioned.

Anonymous asked you: Do you mind getting grammar questions? Because a great long time ago (read: about a year) this nonnie had several teachers who insisted that putting something inside quotation marks was a great way to emphasize things. As in, instead of “do NOT erase the board”, they would write “do “not” erase the board”. It bothered this nonnie a helluva lot, but they were convinced it was correct (and presumably still are). Is it?
Who are these teachers? No. Don’t put quotes around words to “emphasize” them. The function of quotation marks is to show that the quoted material originates from some other source. Putting quotation marks around speech or written text is fairly straightforward usage. When you put quotes around an individual word or phrase, it often creates an implication of sarcasm.

Suppose you see a sign at the grocery store that reads: Fresh “Fish” $10.00. While the grocer may not have meant to, the sign suggests that the product isn’t truly fish, but rather it’s a fish-like substance. The author does not think it fits the definition of fish, but someone somewhere is calling it fish.

“Do ‘not’ erase the board,” seems to imply that it would be okay to erase the board, but don’t let anyone see you do it.

Edit to add: If you put asterisks around a word in a similar way, that *does* indicate emphasis. I think I do it sometimes in my tags because I don’t have a way to bold the font there.

Anonymous asked you: I’ve fallen in love with you through your blog. Omg please love me or I’ll pull a bella swan and jump off a cliff to hear the sound of you blogging again.
I would have loved you if you didn’t pull an Eclipse Pre-battle Jacob to guilt your way into my pants/heart.
